How much does a DBS Check cost?
A DBS check processed through an Umbrella Body usually has two elements that make up the final cost.
1. The DBS fee (set by the Disclosure and Barring Service)
This is a fixed government charge and applies per application, whether you process one check a year or thousands:
- Basic DBS Check: £21.50
- Standard DBS Check: £21.50
- Enhanced DBS Check: £49.50
- Enhanced DBS Check with Adults’ and/or Children’s Barred List: £49.50
2. The Umbrella Body admin fee
This is the fee charged by the Umbrella Body for processing the application. While fees vary across providers, at DBS.care our admin fees for Health and Social Care organisations start from just £3.00 per application — making us one of the most cost-effective solutions in the sector.
What are the levels of DBS Check available?
There are three main levels of DBS checks: Basic, Standard, and Enhanced.
Health and Social Care employers should assess each role’s duties and responsibilities to decide which level is required.
The majority of roles require Enhanced, with some ancillary roles in specific locations being eligible for just Standard.
This ensures safer recruitment practices, protects vulnerable people, and helps organisations stay compliant with safeguarding and CQC standards.
How long does a DBS Check take?
Most DBS checks are completed quickly, with many returned in as little as 48 hours. The exact time depends on the type of check being carried out:
- Basic DBS checks – usually the fastest, often completed within a few hours.
- Standard DBS checks – typically returned within 24–48 hours, and rarely taking more than 5 working days.
- Enhanced DBS checks – these involve Local Police Forces, so while some are completed the same day, they generally take longer. The vast majority, however, are completed within 10 working days.

What does a DBS Check check for?
A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check provides details about an individual’s criminal record, helping Health and Social Care employers make safer recruitment decisions.
